How will the campaign provide indemnity insurance?
In the UK legislation requires that ALL healthcare professionals hold professional indemnity insurance. It can be provided in two ways. One, through the commercial markets, just like regular car and household insurances, or two, via an indemnity product that is owned by an organisation or group, just like the NHS clinical negligence scheme for trusts (CNST).
The commercial markets are not prepared to offer policies at this time, even though there is a clear no claims history, and that leaves self employed midwives with no option but to fundraise to start their own indemnity product.
Our goal is to start the product with enough capital to cover an average large award for birth injury caused by negligence. We can then get midwives back to work assisting women in labour. We will continue to grow this product to secure the future choices for women and midwives through the development of an accessible fund to enable access to independent midwifery care regardless of individual circumstances during pregnancy and birth.
Your support through donations is vital for this product to launch. We are extremely grateful to all who give regularly to our growing fundraising and to all of the ongoing support we receive to provide increased choice for childbirth.
